Bursitis Treatment in Soho, Central London
Bursitis Treatment at Elevate Clinic, Central London:
Bursitis is often a symptom, not the whole problem.
When people hear the word bursitis, they often think:
"Something's inflamed."
And that's true.
A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between muscles, tendons and bones.
When it becomes irritated, everyday movements can suddenly become painful.
But one of the first questions we ask is:
"Why has the bursa become irritated in the first place?"
Because our aim isn't simply to settle the inflammation.
It's to understand what keeps irritating it so it doesn't continue coming back.
That's where we begin.
Let's figure out what's actually going on.
Then we'll build a plan that gets you back to doing what you love.
Does this sound familiar?
People visiting our Soho clinic with bursitis often tell us:
It hurts to lie on my shoulder or hip.
Reaching overhead has become painful.
Walking has become uncomfortable.
It feels tender to touch.
Certain movements suddenly catch.
It's worse after a busy day.
Rest helps, but the pain keeps returning.
I can't work out what I've done.
The location of the pain often gives us valuable clues about which bursa is involved and, more importantly, why it's become irritated.
This is a conversation we have almost every week at our Central London clinic.
Patient:
"I've been told it's bursitis.
I've rested it.
It feels a little better.
Then as soon as I get back to normal, it comes straight back."
That's something we hear a lot.
The question isn't simply:
"How do we calm the bursa down?"
It's:
"Why did it become irritated in the first place?"
Has something changed?
Have you increased your training?
Started decorating the house?
Been sleeping on one side because of another injury?
Has your shoulder become weaker?
Has your hip been taking more load than usual?
Very often, the bursa isn't the primary problem.
It's reacting to something else.
Understanding that makes a huge difference to treatment.
If we’re not measuring it, we’re guessing.
An irritated bursa doesn't tell us why it's irritated.
That's what we're trying to understand.
During your assessment we'll look at things like:
Which movements reproduce your pain
Whether the surrounding muscles are strong enough
Joint movement
Areas of tenderness
Balance and movement control
Everyday activities that increase your symptoms
Whether there are signs that a tendon is also involved
If your symptoms aren't following the pattern we'd expect, we may discuss whether imaging would add useful information.
Every assessment gives us another piece of the puzzle.
Because if we're not measuring how your body is functioning…
We're guessing.
Treatment is about reducing irritation and rebuilding confidence.
In the early stages, our priority is calming the irritated tissues.
That may include:
Activity modification
Manual therapy
Soft tissue treatment
Sports taping
Advice about sleeping positions
Gradually reintroducing movement
As symptoms improve, the focus changes.
Now we want to strengthen the muscles that support the area, improve the way your body tolerates load and reduce the chances of the bursa becoming irritated again.
Treatment isn't simply about settling today's pain.
It's about changing the reason it became irritated in the first place.
Recovery should follow a pattern.
Most bursitis improves very well once the source of irritation is addressed.
Early improvements often include:
Sleeping more comfortably
Less pain during everyday activities
Better movement
Less tenderness
Greater confidence using the joint again
Recovery isn't usually about complete rest.
It's about progressively returning to normal movement without continually provoking the tissues.
We'll guide you through that process step by step.
What if things aren't improving?
If your symptoms aren't responding as we'd expect, we'll reassess.
Have we diagnosed the right problem?
Is the tendon contributing?
Is the joint itself involved?
Would imaging help?
Do we need to change the rehabilitation programme?
Good rehabilitation isn't about continuing the same treatment indefinitely.
It's about adapting as we gather more information.
We’ll work through this together.
One of the biggest frustrations with bursitis is that it often settles…
Only to come back again.
Our aim is to understand why.
We'll explain what we think is driving your symptoms, show you what we're measuring and help you build the strength and confidence needed to return to normal life.
Because lasting improvement doesn't come from avoiding movement forever.
It comes from helping your body tolerate movement again.
FAQs
Is bursitis just inflammation?
Inflammation is part of the picture, but it's often not the whole story. We also want to understand why the bursa became irritated in the first place.
Do I need to rest completely?
Usually not. Short-term modification of painful activities is often helpful, but progressive movement and strengthening are usually important parts of recovery.
Will I need an injection?
Some people benefit from injections, particularly if symptoms are severe or persistent. If we think that's appropriate, we'll discuss it with you and help arrange the right referral.
How long does bursitis take to recover?
Many cases improve within a few weeks once the source of irritation is addressed, although longer-standing or more complex cases may take longer. We'll explain what we expect after your assessment.
